Feature prioritisation workshop

I have planned a full day live workshop designed to prioritise the most effective features to build in the upcoming quarter.

To achieve this goal we will consider the research and persona, which are already available. Then define the major pain points and opportunities on the persona's user journey and propose features to address them. Then prioritise the features with the effort / impact matrix.

Ice breaker

To lighten the mood and enjoy our morning coffee together I have planned a simple game where everyone identifies with a member of the Friends cast and explains why.

Background

Then I plan to explain the agenda and the process we will follow to make sure everyone is onboard and looking in the same direction.

Research insights and persona

The design team has already conducted series of user research initiatives. They will present the main insights. To make sure everyone knows who we're solving for a detailed information about the persona will be also prepared in advance with all the needs, goals and pain points we know from research.

User journey

This is where the fun starts. Based on everything we know so far we will define the user journey by breaking down our main task into steps. We call this the golden path.

For every step of the golden path we try to define what the user is doing, what tools they use and what their main pain points.

After we have the pain points we define the opportunities and brainstorm on what room for improvement we can find.

Everyone has about 10 min to post their ideas, then we discuss to make sure everyone understands everything.

Features

After we know the pains and opportunities we are trying to come up with specific features inside the platform that will solve them. Then we vote on the best ideas to make sure only strong propositions are moved to the next stage.

We use the prioritisation matrix to do score feature ideas on their complexity and impact.

Based on that we divide them in 3 groups:

• Build now: these are features we will work on in the next quarter
• Build later: these are features we will add to the backlog and keep under considerations for future initiatives.
• Put aside: we will record these and let them rest.

Et voila, we have our priorities straight.

Next steps

We have a diverse team in the room so it's time to reflect on upcoming initiatives and define the next steps that will help us achieve our product goals.
