FAQs

Basics
What is Uxcel Certification?
Uxcel Certifications are professional credentials designed to validate your skills and expertise in UX and product design roles. Certifications are available for roles such as UX Designer, Product Designer, UI Designer, and UX Writer. By passing a certification exam, you can demonstrate your knowledge to current or potential employers, showcase your commitment to continuous learning, and increase your chances of advancing your career.

If you don’t pass on your first attempt, don’t worry. You can prepare using Uxcel’s interactive courses and try again when you're ready.

Is a subscription required to access certification?
Yes, Uxcel Certifications are only available to users with an active Pro membership or those on a Teams plan.

Who is eligible for Uxcel Certification?
Any Uxcel Pro or Teams user can register for a certification exam. We recommend reviewing the suggested preparation materials and completing relevant courses and assessments to ensure readiness.

Expectations
What are the requirements for obtaining certification?
To earn certification, you must pass a timed, proctored exam that assesses your knowledge across core product and design topics.

Which courses or career paths should I complete to prepare?
Each certification includes recommended courses to help you prepare. For example, the Product Designer Certification recommends:

- UX Design Foundations
- Design Terminology
- Wireframing
- Design Accessibility

You’ll find these suggestions on each certification page to guide your preparation.

How long is the certification exam?
Each certification exam is timed at 120 minutes. This gives you ample time to work through questions thoughtfully and achieve your best score.

What’s the total time commitment to get certified?
Most learners spend at least 7 days preparing. While the exam itself is 2 hours, users often complete it in under an hour. You’ll have two attempts with no required waiting time in between.

How can I ensure I'm ready?
To prepare effectively:

- Complete all recommended courses for your chosen certification
- Take related skill assessments to benchmark your readiness
- Review sample questions or topics to test your understanding

These steps will help you feel confident going into the exam.

Process
What happens if I fail the exam?
You get two attempts per registration. If you don’t pass within those attempts, your progress will reset and you’ll need to wait 30 days before trying again. Use that time to review materials and prepare for a stronger second round.

Is there a limit to how many times I can take the certification?
There’s no lifetime limit, but there is a 30-day lockout period after using both attempts. This encourages meaningful preparation and ensures exam integrity.

Can I leave the exam once it starts?
Yes, you may leave, but the timer will continue running. If time runs out before you submit, it will count as one of your attempts.

Scoring
How does Uxcel ensure validity and reliability?
Our exams are built with input from industry experts and reviewed through a rigorous process to ensure accuracy and fairness. We use standardized testing methodologies like split-half and test-retest reliability, as well as inter-rater reliability for practical evaluations.

How is the passing score determined?
We use the “bookmark method,” a widely accepted psychometric model. Subject matter experts identify the point where a minimally qualified candidate is unlikely to answer questions correctly, and that score is used to set the passing threshold for each domain and the overall exam.

Why can I still pass if I answered some questions incorrectly?
Uxcel uses adaptive testing logic. The difficulty of your exam adjusts based on your responses. Missing a few advanced questions doesn’t necessarily hurt your score if you performed strongly overall. It’s not about how many questions you got right—it’s about the level of difficulty you consistently performed at.

Why can’t I see which questions I got wrong?
The certification exam is a formal assessment, not a learning tool. To maintain its credibility, we do not show individual results or answers after completion.

Expiration and Renewal
Why does the certification expire?
Certification reflects up-to-date, industry-relevant knowledge. As tools, methods, and standards evolve, certification expiration ensures that your credential remains a trustworthy signal of current competence.

How long is the certification valid?
You’ll be notified 90 days before expiration and can renew anytime during that window by retaking the exam. If you let it expire, your certification status will change to “expired,” but your certificate page will remain accessible.

How do I renew my certification?
You can retake the certification exam following the same process as your original attempt. The renewal exam is identical to the original and confirms that your knowledge is still up to date.

Is there a cost to renew?
No, as long as you maintain an active Uxcel Pro membership or are part of a Teams plan, certification renewal is included at no extra charge.

Misc.
Can I complete the certification in another language?
Currently, all certification exams are only available in English.

What’s the difference between a course certificate and Uxcel Certification?
Course certificates are awarded after completing a Uxcel course or learning module. These are great for showcasing individual topic mastery.

Uxcel Certification, however, is a professional credential earned by passing a formal, timed exam. It’s designed to validate your readiness for real-world product roles, like UX Designer or Product Designer, and is globally recognized by employers.

Can I request disability accommodations?
Yes. If you require accommodations (such as additional time), please contact [email protected], and we’ll be happy to assist you.

Are Uxcel Certifications beneficial for my career?
Absolutely. Earning a certification helps you stand out to hiring managers, prove your skills, and unlock new job opportunities. According to our Uxcel Impact Report, over 17.2% of Pro members received a promotion or salary increase after certification, and more than 68.5% increased their annual salary by an average of $8,143.
