Charging Ahead: Redefining Porsche’s Charging Experience
The Porsche Charging Services project focused on creating a seamless experience for EV owners to activate and manage their charging services. The project was critical to align with the reveal of a new Porsche model and needed to meet the company’s high standards for luxury, innovation, and user experience. My role was to design a user-friendly flow that reflected Porsche’s brand while addressing user pain points effectively.
/ROLE
As a UX Designer, I worked closely with the product manager and the rest of the team to plan and execute the UX deliverables under tight time constraints. My main focus was on ensuring that the activation and management processes for charging services were smooth, intuitive, and aligned with Porsche’s brand values.
/CHALLENGES
One of the biggest challenges was the project’s tight timeline, driven by the scheduled reveal of a new Porsche model. Tasks had to be prioritized carefully to avoid wasting resources while ensuring a high-quality outcome.
Additionally, some Porsche EVs operated on legacy systems, which limited the technical possibilities for certain features. This required creative adjustments to deliver feasible solutions without compromising on user experience or brand standards.
In the end, collaborating with many stakeholders, especially with the highly-positioned management, was challenging and I had to manage many requests coming “from above” and the reality of user needs and behaviors.
/WHAT WAS DONE
To address these challenges, I conducted brief user research, drawing insights from available data and interviews with EV users to identify key pain points. Working alongside the product manager, I developed a detailed UX plan that focused on the most critical aspects of the service.
I created wireframes and prototypes to map out a streamlined user journey for activating and managing charging services, ensuring it was intuitive and aligned with Porsche’s reputation for luxury and precision.
/METHODS USED
My work involved a mix of user research, wireframing, and prototyping using Figma and Porsche’s large design system. I collaborated closely with the product team to prioritize features and adapt designs to technical constraints.
Additionally, I incorporated usability testing to refine the flow and ensure the final design met user expectations.
/OUTCOME & IMPACT
The project was successfully delivered on time, aligning with the launch of Porsche’s new model (postponed to a different date).
The charging service activation and management experience was greatly simplified, enhancing user satisfaction and reinforcing Porsche’s commitment to quality and innovation.
Despite the hardware constraints, the final design maintained a high level of usability and aligned perfectly with Porsche’s luxury brand identity.
/REFLECTION
This project reinforced my ability to prioritize tasks under tight deadlines and adapt creative ideas to practical limitations. It also underscored the importance of collaboration and aligning designs with both user needs and technical realities.
