Icons

Icons are simplified images that represent actions, objects, or ideas. They are a vital part of most user interfaces, helping users find their way around. Their meaning should be clear and explicit to help users rather than confuse them. They work best when they represent similar physical objects (such as a house for “home” or a disk for “save”).

Icons can also appear independently, without a label or other text information. In that case, though, the icon must be commonly used across the Internet and immediately recognizable to users.
