AMC Icons of Horror

Introduction

AMC, the world’s largest movie theater chain, has been delivering unforgettable cinematic experiences for generations. Their AMC Theaters app enhances this experience, offering users an easy way to browse showtimes, book tickets, and even order concessions, all from the comfort of their seats. To celebrate AMC’s legacy in horror and Halloween cinema, this project presents a custom icon set inspired by the chilling classics that have haunted screens for decades, adding a spooky yet familiar touch to the app’s interface

Purpose

The purpose of this Halloween-inspired icon set is to boost engagement by connecting with AMC’s passionate film community, particularly horror fans. By incorporating imagery from AMC’s iconic horror films, these themed icons create a festive and immersive experience within the app. This seasonal refresh not only enhances the user interface but also celebrates the shared love for cinema, fostering a stronger connection between AMC and its moviegoers while building excitement for upcoming films.

Design Considerations

• Picking condensable characters and motifs: Iconic movie characters rely on detailed designs, but for this project, it was crucial to choose characters that could be simplified into clear, functional icons, ensuring both the film reference and usability were easy to recognize.
• Readability at small sizes: Adding new details can easily be overlooked at smaller sizes. Icons should be designed to maintain clarity and convey their intended meanings without confusion.
• Ensure style cohesion: Because AMC already has an established icon style within the app, integrating new icons should follow synonymous rules. Similar line width, negative space, and rounded corners allow for seamless integration and offer familiarity to users.
• Utilize “Easter Eggs”: Rather than creating entirely new icons, subtle modifications to existing ones can effectively add that eerie touch without icons losing their functional meaning.

Sketches

Although some are direct references from films, others can be designed with motifs seen in several horror/Halloween films.

Finalized Designs

These icons offer callbacks to famous films while keeping the same style as the year-round AMC app for seamless integration. Currently, the AMC app only supports dark mode.

Sizing

The only icon that called for a different design when sized down was the profile icon. Removing the jacket detailing and encasing in a circle provided better recognizability at a smaller size.

Micro-Interactions

Although the app doesn’t have animated icons, adding some small animations to the nav bar and favorited icons brings these motifs to life!
