My main goal for this project was to explore how to strategically enhance Trello's visual identity.

I wanted its color palette to move beyond the corporate blue, seeking to establish Trello's own distinct, more informal personality within the Atlassian ecosystem. I realized this was key, as Trello serves a very diverse audience, from large companies to freelancers and everyday users.

During my exploration, I discovered that teal could be a fantastic solution; it subtly retains that original blue essence, while bringing a much fresher and unique feel, better fitting Trello's spirit.

To visualize and apply this strategy, I designed a UI screen based on the existing Trello interface for a laptop device. This allowed me to tangibly showcase how my color system would function in a practical context.

This evolution focuses on optimizing color application, defining clear roles for:

  • Primary colors – for important elements like CTAs and active links.
  • Neutral colors – to help segment the design into distinct blocks.
  • Secondary colors – for task tags classification.
  • Tertiary colors – for prioritizing tasks.
  • System colors – to provide instant feedback on user actions and system status.

Good exploration, Ainara. I like the philosophical thinking behind the chosen colours. However, it would be interesting to know why you believe the Trello brand colour should be updated, and how you concluded that teal would be a good choice.

I’m also curious whether any usability testing was conducted to assess users’ perception of the new look. Even with the warm and friendly secondary and tertiary colours, the overall design feels cold and corporate, which doesn’t align with your intended goal.

Keep up with good work,

Yuliia
