Passive zones

Passive zones Bad Practice
Passive zones Best Practice

Elements that don’t need immediate attention — menus, secondary links, search functions, etc. — should be placed in passive zones. Placing more important elements there makes them less likely to be noticed — users would rather see them aligned along a rule of thirds grid. Avoid passive zones for elements that should immediately engage users and motivate them to take action, like the title, hero image, or CTA button.
