Rationale behind design choice :

In order to give an innovative twist for a “related videos page on mobile app, I chose to combine convenience with customisation. Convenience through scrolling downwards. Users are more used to scrolling down now to see more information on a video.

Taking what Netflix did with the three choices (Episodes, Cast and Related), I then chose to add tags that auto-generate according to the genre, cast and director of the video. This way, the user can click on a tag and see videos that are related to the original video but with an extra focus on the area they prefer.

Related videos accessible only by scrolling down under said video

Once the user scrolls down he can chose between 3 options : more episodes, a break down of the cast and related videos. This appears through push in animations.

Once the user clicks on related, the app has auto-generated related tags concerning the video the user just watched. These are the same tags that are used for the searching function of the app. They generate words concerning the genre of the video, the cast and the director. Once the user clicks on a tag, it appears at the top of the list with a cross in order to delete it from the selected tags if needed.

Depending on the tags selected, the grid underneath the tags is updated to provide the most related video options.

As the footer of the related page section, the user always has the option to go back home, to go to his/her downloads, or to go to his profile to see his favourited videos.

The ability to choose a movie based on a cast tag? Oh yeah, I’m in. This would be a game changer. I’m currently doing this manually, I often watch a movie with what I think is a rising star and then dig through their IMDB and fansites. If this gets implemented I’d totally resubscribe 😄 Great concept, Alice!

Tuduum 📺
