Instructional onboarding

Instructional onboarding

Instructional onboarding teaches users how to use an interface. It's necessary when the features or workflows are unique to the app, are new and unfamiliar to users, or when instructions or a tutorial are expected (mobile gaming).

Instructional onboarding comes in many forms such as:

  • Deck-of-cards tutorials
  • Contextual help
  • Interactive walkthroughs[1]

Most mobile apps don't need instructional onboarding — resources are better spent on making a UI more usable. If you do include this type of onboarding in your app, make it short, optional, and only highlight the minimum amount of information users need to know to use the app.
