INCEPTION - 404 Page
What if Inception had its own website with a 404 page?
As a huge fan of Inception, I’ve always been fascinated by its complex, layered narrative and dreamlike visuals. When it came time to create a 404 page for a hypothetical website promoting the film, I realized the theme of Inception fits perfectly. After all, being lost in a dream (or in this case, a broken page) mirrors the film’s exploration of the subconscious. So, I decided to design a 404 page that captures the mysterious and surreal atmosphere of the movie.
The 404 Page Design Details
The design of the 404 page was a chance to really play with the concepts of being “lost” and unsure of what’s real. Here are a few of the creative decisions that went into it:
• A Spinning Totem: The infamous spinning top from Inception plays a key role. I added it as a dynamic element on the page, spinning endlessly as a symbol of being stuck between dream and reality.
• Minimalist Navigation: I wanted to keep things simple and mysterious. When a user lands on the 404 page, they’ll see clear, yet thematic, navigation options with labels like “Wake Up” and “You are stuck in a dream within a dream” to guide them back to working parts of the site.
• The Buildings in the Background: One of the subtle visual elements of the page is the background itself. I decided to communicate the famous “folding city” effect from the movie. As users navigate the 404 page, they can see towering skyscrapers and city blocks seemingly in a minimalistic style, a direct nod to the scene where Cobb and Ariadne manipulate the dream world’s architecture. This not only visually enhances the page but also reinforces the idea that users are trapped in a dream layer, adding to the surreal feeling of the experience.
• “Back to Reality” button: One of the standout elements on the 404 page is the “Back to Reality” button. To enhance the user experience and maintain the thematic connection to Inception, I incorporated a small totem into the button design. When the user hovers over the button, the totem performs a subtle animation where it folds down, simulating the idea of “falling” back to reality, just like waking up from a dream.
This folding motion not only communicates the concept of waking up but also serves as an abstract directional arrow pointing to the right, symbolizing the path back to the homepage or main site. It’s a simple, but visually engaging way to give users a sense of movement and transition, keeping them immersed in the dream-versus-reality theme of Inception.
-------------------------✧-------------------------
There are even more subtle details embedded throughout the design that tie back to the themes of Inception. Can you spot them? Each element was carefully chosen to enhance the immersive experience and keep you questioning what’s real and what’s part of the dream.
Feel free to take a look at the interactive prototype and let me know your thoughts. I’d love to hear your feedback

Thanks for your submission, Javier! Your idea stands out! I like your copy and the layout of the page. However, you need to adjust the color of the nav bar tabs because is failing WCAG test : 2.3:1 (navy with red) and 2.7:1 (black with red).
Also, the button's color "back to reality" is not so inspiring. In most of the globe, the red button typically conveys urgency, warning, or a negative action. Note down same problem with WCAG.
Beside that, congrats! good work!
Great vibes!
Really creative take on a 404 page 👏 The way you tied Inception’s dreamlike themes into the design — from the spinning totem to the “Back to Reality” button and folding city background — makes the page immersive and memorable. It feels thematic while still guiding users clearly, which is not easy to balance. Overall, a unique and engaging execution that stands out 🚀✨
