Tree testing
Tree testing is a method for evaluating your product's information architecture and findability of content in a product. Participants are presented with a text-only version of the site's hierarchy and asked to complete a series of tasks. The goal is to determine whether users can find what they need based on the site's structure when it is stripped of all other UI elements.
Tree testing is the perfect tool for:
- Evaluating findability, labeling system, and information architecture
- Validating your ideas before designing them
- Getting insights into your users’ mental models[1]
To write good tree testing tasks, avoid giving leading instructions and using matching keywords in the tree.
Pro Tip: Combine tree testing with card sorting methods to better understand information architecture, logical grouping, and labels.
