Three-point lighting

Three-point lighting

The three-point lighting setup is the most traditional method that contains three types of lights — key light, fill light, and backlight. The key light is the primary one and creates the mood of the scene. The fill lights fill in the shadows that the key light produces, taking care of details in the darkness. The backlight is also called a "hair light" as it comes from behind and points at the character's neck.[1]

A proper lighting setup helps control shadows and show the best or worst of subjects.
