Implementing the hero's journey
Originating from mythologist Joseph Campbell's work, the hero's journey is a classic storytelling framework. It tells the story of a hero who ventures from the ordinary world into a realm of adventure, faces and overcomes challenges, and returns transformed.[1]
When we talk about UX design, the user becomes our hero. They embark on a journey, navigating through your digital product. They may face obstacles or difficulties, but with the product's help — acting as a mentor or guide — they overcome those challenges and achieve their goals.
Take Duolingo, the popular language-learning app, as an example. Users begin their journey with the goal of learning a new language. The challenges may be complex grammar, new vocabulary, or finding the time to practice. However, Duolingo, as a guide, makes this journey easier by providing:
- Bite-sized lessons
- Interactive exercises
- Regular reminders
It helps users stay on track, providing them with a sense of achievement as they progress, effectively employing the Hero's Journey narrative.
