Differentiate product development from product management

Product development and product management are often linked but they focus on different responsibilities. Development is the structured process of bringing a product to life. It covers activities such as research, design, prototyping, testing, and launch. Development ensures that the product is built, functional, and ready for use.

Management is broader. It defines what should be built and why, setting the product vision and aligning it with business goals. It considers customer needs, market opportunities, and long-term growth strategies. While development answers the “how,” management provides the “what” and “why.” Both are essential, and when they operate together, the product is not only built effectively but also guided by a clear direction that makes sense for the company and its users.[1]
