Fear of missing out

FOMO is an acronym that stands for the "fear of missing out." It was coined in 1996 by marketing strategist Dr. Dan Herman. This phenomenon refers to social anxiety that others' lives are much more interesting, exciting, and fulfilling than our own. It develops into a deep sense of envy and makes people feel less confident in their skills and personal qualities. Social media websites like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Snapchat feed on FOMO.

Using too much red and orange in your designs can provoke a sense of anxiety, stress, and mental exhaustion that intensify FOMO. While it might increase your conversion rates and boost sales, use FOMO with caution to avoid triggering feelings of unhappiness and depression among users.[1]
