Navigation focuses on how users move through and interact with a system or application. Effective navigation in IA aims to provide users with clear pathways to explore and find the content they need.
There are 4 types of navigation systems:
- Global navigation allows users to access the top-level pages of a site. It's presented on every page and helps users understand where they are. For example, a website's header menu that displays links to Home, About Us, Contact Us, and other top-level pages.
- Local navigation helps users explore the immediate area. This helps users understand what's nearby. For example, a sidebar menu that displays links to related pages or sections of the current page.
- Contextual navigation points users to related pages. For example, an e-commerce website that points users to similar products.
- Supplementary navigation systems provide alternatives for users to complete their tasks. Examples include sitemaps, indexes, guides, and search.[[1]]
